¡Ú First Content Production Committee To Form An LLP In Japan¡Û
We will establish a production committee in Japan in the form of an LLP to produce an animation series based upon a popular feature film series to be released in 2007. The animation series will be released preceding the feature film. This will be the first LLP business scheme to be used for a content production committee in Japan.
The LLP is a system that focuses on the professional services in research and development, content production, fund management and consulting. In Europe and the US, union systems (Partnership) such as LLPs have already been widely utilized as the support bases for content professionals such as producers, film directors and creators. Japan, who seeks to be a world leader in the content industry, introduced the LLP system as of August 1, 2005. There are high expectations for LLPs to serve an important role in assisting not only major players but also small production companies and individual creators so that they may flourish in the content industry.
¡ÚIncreased Rewards for the Participants ¡Û
It was a common practice to form a voluntary partnership unit among industry members in order to raise funds for the production of an anime property or feature film, for planning and production and for the management of copyrights. Additionally, the production companies were not invited to participate in the production committee. It used to be ¡Èwork for hire¡É for them and they were not entitled to contingency fees.
However, an LLP makes the following possible: 1) limited liability, 2) internal autonomy and 3) taxes on participants. This enables non-industry corporations to participate unlike before, and a production company may receive a high contingency fee in proportion to their contribution to the production even if their financial contribution is little. This system allows for a wider range of participants and promises increased rewards for each participant.
¡Ú Current Project of Japanimation Partners, LLP¡Û
Currently Japanimation Partners, LLP is producing an animation series to be released before its original Hollywood feature film, enormously popular worldwide. The entire budget is approximately 900 million yen. It will be an anthology series consisting of several 10 to 20 minute short films based on scripts co-produced in partnership with Hollywood movie studios. Japanimation Partners will raise funds, plan and develop and produce the properties, and the major Hollywood studios will distribute them, which will also be the first time this has ever been done in Japan.
The producer in Japan is Hiroaki Takeuchi who worked on Animatrix (Warner Home Video), the animation anthology of the popular Hollywood SF movie, The Matrix. He will oversee the collaborative work of emerging, talented animation directors in Japan, Korea, France and the US. It is sure to be a series of cutting-edge visual masterpieces featuring a variety of animation techniques.
